New Landscapes 2018

IMG_20180624_224324

A collage of recent landscape work. Sizes vary from 10 x 10 inches to 24 x 24 inches.  I really enjoy the challenge of creating the various green shades.  When it cools off a bit I will get back out there and do more plein air work, until then I will stay cool painting landscapes in my studio 🙂

En plein air: Snape Maltings

Even though Saturday was gloomy, I headed out to paint at Snape Maltings. I am so glad I did, it was a great exercise in all weather painting. It was quite cold and miserable but the subtle greyed tones in the sky and muted variations in the marshland was fantastic to paint.
Work in progress, the underpainting
The finished piece. Not bad for painting in the drizzling rain!

Plein air painting: Yellow fields

On Saturday I set out to do some plein air painting. I didn’t have a particular place in mind but I knew I didn’t want to go too far from home. After 2 hours searching for inspiration, I followed a footpath to a clearing and beautiful yellow fields (oilseed rape). It only took me an hour to paint and after all the walking I was too tired to do another. I really would like to spend up to 3hrs painting, so I will have a plan next time!

Video: Rain clouds

My recent painting is of a moody sky, it took 25 min. to paint.  I am working on making bold marks and making all my marks “say something”.  This will help when I get back to painting outdoors.  Come on Spring!

Below this photo is a video showing my painting process. Enjoy!

Trying out frames

These just came back from the framers. The painting size is 6 x 12 inches, framed size is 8.5 x 14.5 inches.
I have to get used to seeing my work framed, but I am coming around to it.

Video tutorial with commentary!

I think I am getting the hang of making short videos (with the help of my knowledgable husband).  I added step by step commentary to my latest one.  Below is the finished piece, underneath the image is the video.  I really hope you enjoy it!
